Security+ vs CEH: Which Certification is Worth It in 2026?

Two certifications dominate entry-level cybersecurity in India: CompTIA Security+ and EC-Council CEH. They look similar from outside; the differences matter at hiring time.

Security+ in one paragraph

Vendor-neutral, broad coverage of security fundamentals — risk, crypto, network security, identity, governance. Recognised by Indian government and defence contractors, accepted by every IT services firm. Costs less, easier to pass, useful for SOC analyst and general security analyst roles.

CEH in one paragraph

Offensive-leaning, covers attacker tools and techniques (reconnaissance, scanning, web exploitation, malware). Strong brand recognition in Indian HR filters. More expensive, more memorisation-heavy, useful for VAPT analyst and penetration tester roles. The practical version (CEH Practical) adds real hands-on lab work.

Which one for which role

• SOC analyst, GRC, audit, general security — Security+.
• VAPT, pen test, offensive security — CEH (and plan OSCP later).
• Government or defence-adjacent work — Security+ usually mandatory.
• Resume keyword filter at large Indian services firms — CEH still has higher recognition.

What recruiters actually filter on

Many Indian recruiters use these certs as a binary filter — present or absent. A cert without a project portfolio gets you to the screen; a portfolio gets you the offer. Use the cert to pass the filter, then prove yourself with HTB writeups or a CTF history.

The 2026 advice

If budget allows only one and you are unsure of the path, Security+ is the safer pick. If you are clearly targeting offensive security, do CEH then OSCP. Both certs expire and require renewal — factor that into the cost.
