Performance marketing — paid ads optimised for measurable conversion — is one of the fastest-growing marketing specialties in India. The career compounds quickly because results are visible and attributable.
The role at three stages
- Junior (0-2 yrs) — runs campaigns on Meta and Google under supervision. Owns weekly reporting. Salary ₹4L-₹8L.
- Mid (2-5 yrs) — owns budget for a channel, builds testing frameworks, mentors juniors. ₹9L-₹18L.
- Lead (5+ yrs) — owns multi-channel mix, vendor negotiation, strategy. ₹20L-₹40L+ at scaled product companies.
The skills that compound
Two stack on top of platform knowledge. First, statistical literacy — knowing when a campaign result is signal vs noise. Second, customer understanding — talking to ten customers a quarter beats reading attribution reports. The performance marketers who become CMOs are the ones who built both.
What to learn in your first six months
Google Ads (Search and Performance Max), Meta Ads Manager (Advantage+ campaigns), Google Analytics 4, one attribution platform (Triple Whale, Polar, or Northbeam if e-commerce), and Excel or Google Sheets at advanced level. SQL is increasingly expected — start early.
Common career mistake
Staying purely on one channel for too long. A pure “Meta person” caps at mid-level. The path up requires understanding the mix: paid + organic + lifecycle + brand. Plan rotations or stretch projects after year two.
Where the jobs are
D2C brands, Indian SaaS companies, marketing agencies (Performics, GroupM, Schbang), and platforms themselves (Meta, Google partner roles). Agency tenure builds breadth fast; in-house builds depth on one product.
